Dec 12, 09 Well I hope everyone is enjoying the cold! I myself hate winter and the cold, but as a Artist I love the long winter shadows and the anatomy of the trees without the leaves. Living down by the mighty Mississippi it's beautiful year round and winter is no exception. Currently I am finishing up my last studio class with Joe Paquet. It has been a great learning experience plus the friendships I have developed with Joe and the other painters in the group has been exceptional. Well everyone have a safe and wonderful Xmas and New Years. John

-A DECADE OF RIDING-
PHOTO’S, PAINTINGS AND WRITINGS
               BY JOHN FREDRICK HECKMAN

Aug. 23-31, 2009 Albert Handell's Workshop
MASTER PAINTER ALBERT HANDELL was in Grand Marais last week for a mentorship workshop program. My wife and I were fortunate enough to learn more about pastel painting from such an accomplished and humble man. In this photo he was painting the river falls by Lutsen Resort. Two of my paintings are on the right from his workshop.

Title "Pastel Clouds"

Size 17x23" Price $ 650.00

Information on this painting: I painted this plien-aire on June 13th 2009 location upper Mississippi on Hwy 1 North of Sartell, Mn at an old abandon River Bar. It was a very sunny day in the middle of the afternoon, slight breeze with a temp in the high 70's. I used kitty wallis paper with winsor-newton watercolors and schmincke soft pastels. Lots of people boating and playing in the water that day while my lovely wife Rainy and I painted for a few hours.

Jan. 14th 2009
Last August my wife and I were involved in a plien-aire painting contest in Grand Marais, Minnesota sponsored by the Grand Marais Art Colony. I just want to say it was fabulous and I would highly recommend it to anyone. I have only started painting plien-aire this year so I am by no means an expert, however as always a student I am learning this new experience. It fits with my personality, as I find it is like standing on the edge of a cliff, not that I have done that lately but all kidding aside it is very spontaneous and it helps all of us perfectionists to move along when the sun and shadows tend to change every few hours.

The other thing I want to say about that week was we met a very interesting and humble painter who graciously gave of his time even though he was mentoring many artists in pastel plein-aire painting that week in Grand Marais. We had the chance to enjoy breakfast with him asking many questions plus watch him paint free of charge, well almost free as we insisted on buying breakfast! Anyways it really did prove to be the highlight of many wonderful days of painting.

Finally I want to share what this blog is all about: As they say "following the paintings". Both my wife and I have thrown ourselves into this new method of painting and decided after our experience to take Albert Handell's mentorship painting class this coming August in Grand Marais. To prepare for this we ended up buying two of his books and two of his dvd's on plien-arie pastels and oils. Oh and of course we our doing lots and lots of painting using the methods we our learning in his books and dvds in preparation for our August teaching.

Currently over Christmas and New Years holidays I purchased some Kitty Wallis paper and a nice expensive set of Schmincke pastel landscape colors and started painting!!! Here is what I have done so far:

SPLIT ROCK $500
CASCADES $400
CASCADE RIVER $400
